Loperamide 2mg anti-diarrhoea capsules
Loperamide 2mg (Imodium) hard gelatine capsules are an antispasmodic/anti-diarrhoea medicine used to treat IBS bowel spasms and diarrhoea. Take 2 capsules initially, then 1 capsule after each episode of diarrhoea.
Read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects, cautions, and interactions with other drugs. Loperamide 2mg is available from pharmacies without a prescription.
How Loperamide Works
Loperamide slows the movement of contents through the bowel and reduces the frequency of diarrhoea. During diarrhoea, fluid is lost from the body, so it is important to replace fluids by drinking regularly throughout the day.
Dosage:
Short-term diarrhoea (adult): Take 2 capsules to start, then 1 capsule after each loose bowel movement. Do not take more than 6 capsules in 24 hours. Stop treatment if diarrhoea lasts longer than 48 hours and see your doctor.
IBS-related diarrhoea (adults 18+): Take 2 capsules to start, then 1–2 capsules after each loose bowel movement, depending on severity. Maximum 6 capsules in 24 hours. Can be used for repeated attacks for up to 2 weeks, but not for any single attack lasting more than 48 hours.
If you forget a dose:
- Take the next dose after your next loose stool. Do not double up.
Overdose:
- Taking too much can be serious, especially in children or people with liver/kidney problems. Seek medical help immediately if overdose occurs. Symptoms may include rapid or irregular heartbeat, muscle stiffness, drowsiness, uncoordinated movements, weak breathing, or difficulty urinating.
Side effects:
- Common: Headache, feeling sick, constipation, wind.
- Uncommon: Drowsiness, dry mouth, abdominal discomfort, skin rash, dizziness, being sick.
- Rare/serious: Allergic reactions (wheezing, swelling, rash), severe stomach pain
