About Jext and what is it used for?

Jext is a disposable, pre-filled pen that delivers a sterile solution of adrenaline and treats severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that occurs when you are exposed to an allergen such as insect stings, medicines, certain foods, or latex.

Jext pen manufactured by ALK-Abelló and administered to your thigh muscles. If you are at risk of anaphylaxis, always carry two single-use adrenaline auto-injector pens with you, and they must be administered 5-15 minutes apart when needed.

anaphylaxis symptoms develop quickly and require immediate medical help, typically with an injection of epinephrine to avoid serious complications. If delayed, anaphylaxis can lead you to death. To manage anaphylaxis effectively, it is crucial to recognize early symptoms and seek prompt medical attention.

Jext pen offers a premeasured single dose of adrenaline for the emergency treatment of sudden life-threatening allergic reactions to:

  • Foods such as fish, nuts, eggs, etc.
  • Drugs such as anti-inflammatory medicines and antibiotics
  • Exercise
  • Insect bites or stings, particularly wasp and bee stings

It is a epinephrine injection, letting you use it quickly and confidently in an emergency and giving you enough time to get to a medical center or hospital.

How long does Jext for anaphylaxis take to work?

Jext starts working immediately once you take it. It quickly delivers adrenaline to counteract allergic reactions. However, the noticeable result may take 5-10 minutes but you still need immediate medical attention.

The effect of this medicine starts to wear off after 10-20 minutes. Always carry your Jext pen and use it immediately in an emergency situation, followed by contacting medical services for further care.

How to use the Jext pen?

You must use the ALK Jext pen for anaphylaxis according to your doctor’s advice. The step-by-step guide to using Jext pen include:

  • Before administration, ensure the liquid is clear and colorless. If it is discolored or has particles, replace the pen.

  • Hold the Jext pen in your dominant hand (the hand you use to write). Ensure your thumb is close to the yellow cap.

  • Remove the yellow cap with your second hand.

  • Hold the injector at a right angle and ensure its tip is against your outer thigh.

  • Push the black tip firmly into your outer thigh until you hear a ‘click’ sound.

  • Hold the Jext auto-injector firmly against the thigh for 10 seconds, and then remove it. The black tip will extend automatically and hide the needle.

  • Massage your injection area for 10 seconds for better absorption of medicine.

  • If your symptoms persist, take the second injection after 5-15 minutes.

  • After taking Jext auto-injector, seek emergency help immediately as symptoms can reoccur.

Tips for Jext administration

Some notable tips of taking a Jext adrenaline injection are:

  • You can inject Jext directly through the skin of the outer thigh (anterolateral thigh) or through the clothing.

  • Do not inject this medicine into the buttock (your bottom)

  • It is designed for single use only.

  • After administration, some liquid may remain in the pen and it cannot be reused.

  • You may notice a small air bubble in your pen. Remember that it will not affect its working or medicine delivery process.

  • Do not take more or less than the recommended dose.

If you still have any questions, consult your doctor or read the patient leaflet.

Jext alternatives

Some alternatives to Jext are:

Jext vs EpiPen

Jext and EpiPen deliver a single dose of adrenaline in severe allergic reactions; they differ in many ways:

Jext has a yellow safety cap and black needle end while EpiPen has a blue safety cap and orange needle end.

For administration, you need to hold a Jext pen against your thigh while in the case of an EpiPen, you need to hold it 10 cm away from your thigh.

For the Jext pen, you have to hold it firmly for 10 seconds while in the case of an EpiPen, you need to hold it for 3 seconds.

After administering Jext, you need to massage the injection site for 10 seconds. For EpiPen, you do not need to massage the injection site.

Jext has a longer shelf life i.e. up to 24 months while EpiPen has a shelf life of 12-20 months.

The choice between them depends on availability and personal preferences. Consult your doctor for better advice.
