About EpiPen

The EpiPen is a pre-filled adrenaline auto-injector, a convenient, life-saving device for treating anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction caused by things such as drugs, foods, exercise, stings, or insect bites. It contains a sterile solution of adrenaline and is injected immediately by the person or caregiver when an allergic reaction is suspected or occurs.

Delayed use of epinephrine injection may worsen the anaphylactic reaction and lead you towards death. Contact your healthcare provider to determine how to use EpiPen safely.

When is the right time to use an epi pen?

You must use an EpiPen when you notice the very first signs of anaphylaxis.

When you have an allergic emergency like anaphylaxis, use EPIPEN or Jext auto-injectors right away.(sources).

Anaphylaxis attacks generally begin with mild signs like itching, hives, or a tingly feeling in your mouth. When you experience these symptoms, it's important to pay attention to them.

These signs can progress very quickly, so identifying them early and getting help, such as using an epinephrine shot, can make all the difference in preventing a more serious reaction.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is unpredictable and refers to severe allergic reactions that occur when a person or child comes in contact with things they are allergic to.

It is a life-threatening condition that can cause death, so immediate medical help is needed. Its symptoms develop rapidly (within minutes) and affect multiple body symptoms, including:

Skin: Hives, itching, flushing, swelling (angioedema)

Respiratory: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, hoarse voice, coughing

Cardiovascular: Dizziness, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, fainting

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea

Other: Confusion, anxiety, feeling of impending doom

If you are at risk of severe allergic reactions, always carry 2 EpiPen Auto-Injector with you. Also, seek emergency help even after using this device as symptoms can recur.

How should you use an EPIPEN?

Before you use EpiPen or Jext injection, tell your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues, asthma, depression, Parkinson’s disease, or if you’re pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.

You must use an Epinephrine Injector according to your doctor’s advice. Moreover:

Before using it, carefully read the EpiPen patient leaflet.

Each pen contains a 2 ml solution for injection and is intended for single use only. Its needle length is approximately 15 mm.

  • Before using the EPIPEN pen, make sure the solution is clear and colorless. You can check the solution using its small window. If the solution is discolored or has particles, discard the pen even if it is before the expiry date.
  • To use the pen, grab your pen with your dominant hand (the hand you use to write) and remove its blue safety cap.
  • Hold the injector at 90 degrees, 10 cm (4 inches) away from the outer thigh. Ensure that the orange tip is pointing towards your outer thigh. Never put your fingers, hand, or thumb over the orange tip.
  • Now jab the pen into your outer thigh at a right angle and hold it firmly for 3 seconds before removing it.
  • Its needle can go through certain clothing and you do not need to remove clothing after using the injector. However, ensure that it does not hit your buckles, zippers, or buttons.
  • During and after taking the injection, you must keep sitting or lying down. If you are giving it to a child, hold its leg firmly in place before and during the injection to avoid injuries.
  • After use, discard the used needles and syringes in a sharp container. Do not put them in a trash can.
  • Do not use it more often than directed.
  • After taking the injection, seek emergency help immediately as the medicine can wear off in 20-30 minutes.
  • If you have taken too much of this medicine, seek medical help.
  • Do not share your injector with others as it can harm them.
  • You should not inject it intravenously or into the buttocks.

If you are still unsure about the usage of EiPen, read the patient leaflet

What is the rule for Epinephrine Auto-Injector?

The rule for using an Epinephrine auto-injector is that you must inject it into the outer thigh without the need to remove clothing. Hold it firmly for 3 seconds for optimal medicine administration and after injecting it, seek emergency help immediately as symptoms can recur.

How Long Does an EpiPen Take To Work?

EpiPen starts working right after you receive a dose and counteract severe allergic reactions; however, the optimal results may take 5-10 minutes. After 5 minutes, if your symptoms do not improve, take the second dose and seek emergency help immediately.

Is there a generic for the EpiPen Auto-Injector?

FDA approved the generic version of EpiPen auto-injector in 2018 called Teva’s Epinephrine Auto-Injector. The generic version also offers the same life-saving adrenaline but may differ in cost, shelf life, and design; so consult your doctor to determine the right fit for you.

What is the first thing you must do after administering an Epinephrine Auto-Injector?

After administering an Epinephrine Auto-injector, immediately seek emergency help as symptoms can recur. Also, monitor yourself or the person you have injected the medicine with carefully for any further reactions.

What is the mechanism of an auto-injector?

An auto-injector delivers the pre-measured dose of medication (especially adrenaline) via a spring-loaded mechanism. When you press it against your skin, it activates its needle and lets it quickly inject the medication into the body, treating severe allergic reactions efficiently.

What is the difference between EpiPen and EpiPen Jr doses?

The difference between Epipen and EpiPen Jr doses include: EpiPen delivers 0.3 mg of adrenaline and is designed for adults and children weighing 30 kg or more while EpiPen Jr delivers 0.15 mg and is best for children weighing 15 kg.
