Frequently asked questions
What is Clotrimazole 1% Cream used for?
Clotrimazole 1% Cream treats fungal skin infections, including:
- Athlete’s foot
- Ringworm
- Fungal rashes caused by moulds, yeasts and other fungi
- Skin infections with yeast (Candida)
- Candidal nappy rash
- Candidal vulvitis
- Candidal balanitis
Do children or older adults need a different dose?
No — the dosage is the same for all ages, unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.
How do I know if my rash is fungal?
Fungal rashes often look:
- Red, itchy and irritated
- Circular or ring-shaped (ringworm)
- Sore with small satellite spots (Candida/yeast)
- Peeling or cracked (athlete’s foot)
- Shiny, moist or inflamed (skin folds, nappy area)
- If you’re unsure, speak to a pharmacist or GP before using the cream.
How long does the cream take to work?
Symptoms often start improving in a few days, but the infection takes longer:
- Yeast (Candida) infections: treat at least 2 weeks.
- Ringworm / athlete’s foot: treat around 1 month.
- Stopping early can cause the infection to return.
How do I use Clotrimazole Cream?
- Apply a thin layer to the affected skin 2–3 times a day.
- Rub it in gently.
- A ½ cm strip of cream treats an area about the size of your hand.
Treatment duration:
- Dermatophyte infections: at least 1 month
- Candidal infections (Candida/yeast): at least 2 weeks
- If treating feet, wash and dry them carefully — especially between toes — before applying cream.
Is it safe for babies?
Yes, for fungal nappy rash caused by Candida.
But if the rash:
- hasn’t been diagnosed as fungal
- looks severe, blistered, or oozing
- doesn’t improve within a few days → get advice from a pharmacist or GP before continuing.

Can I use it for vaginal or penile thrush?
Yes — for external irritation only:
- Vulval soreness/itching
- Soreness at the tip of the penis (balanitis)
- Do not insert the cream inside the vagina or urethra.
Can I use condoms while using this cream?
Be careful. Clotrimazole/Canesten Cream can damage latex condoms and diaphragms, reducing protection.
Use alternative contraception for 5 days after finishing the cream.
Is it safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding?
- Pregnancy: Can be used only under supervision of a doctor or midwife.
- Breastfeeding: Usually safe. Avoid applying to nipples — or wash thoroughly before feeding.

Why does the cream sometimes sting?
The ingredients cetostearyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol can cause:
- Mild burning
- Stinging
- Redness
- Irritation
This is common
- But if the reaction becomes severe → stop using and seek advice.
When should I see a doctor instead?
Seek medical advice if:
- The rash spreads or worsens
- No improvement after 2 weeks (yeast) or 1 month (fungal)
- You’re not sure it’s fungal
- There is strong pain, discharge, fever or cracks in the skin
- The area becomes swollen or blistered
- Your baby seems distressed or the rash worsens
Can I use moisturisers or deodorants with it?
- Yes — but apply them after the cream has fully absorbed.
- Avoid heavy ointments that can block the medicine from reaching the skin.
